In Petersburg, Virginia a tunnel was excavated and packed with dynamite by Union troops. On July 30, 1864 the charge was detonated, exploding enemy lines and hollowing out a large crater. A tactical error allowed the Southern forces to regroup and hold the North. The Union army had lost 4400 men.
