The Horse's Prayer
To thee, my master, I offer my prayer
Feed, water and care for me
When the day's work is done, give me shelter
and a clean, dry bed.
Be kind and pet me, that I may learn to love you.

Do not whip me when going uphill
Never strike or beat me, but allow me
a chance to understand you
Do not overload me, or hitch me
where water will drip on me.
Keep me well shod and do not take away
my defense against flies and mosquitoes
by cutting off my tail.

I cannot tell you when I am thirsty,
so give me clean cool water.
Give me shelter from the hot sun,
put a blanket on me when I am standing in the cold.

For I will carry you without a murmur,
and wait patiently for you day and night.
Give me safe and sure footing.
Remember that I am ready at any moment
to lose my life in your service.

And finally, my dear master,
when my useful strength is gone
do not turn me out to starve or freeze,
but take my life in the kindest way
and do not consider me irreverent
if I ask it in the name of Him
who was born in a stable like me.
